Zilina is one of the most important tourist regions of Slovakia. Zilina is the center of Zhilin district famous for its spa resorts.
The city is famous for its castle which is called Buolatin. It is situated near the confluence of two rivers the Vag and the Kisutsa. The castle was founded in the 13th century but was rebuilt many times later and now it looks like in the 30s of the last century.
Besides Budatinsky Castle there are a lot of unique buildings and monuments which are considered to be the golden fund of the historical architecture of Slovakia. There are old houses of German protestants of the 15th century in the central Marianske square, there are monks districts of middle-aged Jesuits. Part of Povazhska gallery is situated nowadays in a church of Jesuitical Abbey. The other sights of Zilina are St. Paul’s Cthedral (18th century), the Tower of Tall Weeds (16th century) and the Clock Tower in Glinko square (18th century).
Zilina is famous not only for its architecture but history as well. In 1938 the first government of the republic was formed here. But not all the people in Slovakia like to speak about this event because some people suppose that the government was supported by Nazi Germany that time.
Most of the tourists know Zilina because if you come to spa resorts you will certainly go through Zilina. The most famous spa resorts are Rayetske Teplitse, Turchianske Teplitse, Bardeyevske Kupele and the largest in the Eastern Europe aqua park Tetraland near the town of Liptov.
Zilina is also rich in the memorials of Middle Ages. Near Zilina there are ruins Strechno Fortress which is situated on the cliff of 70 meters high over the river Vag.
The most convenient way to Zilina is by train. The trains come to Zilina from many places in Slovakia, like Bratislave, Koshice, Trenchin and others
