Poprad
If you’ve decided to have an active rest skiing in Slovakia and have chosen High Tatry – a well-known Slovak skiing region as your travel destination then we can claim that you’ll get to Poprad first before getting to this region.
Poprad is an old Slovak town which has been famous since the 13 – th century. In those times it was inhabited primarily by the Germans. In the 14-th century it was given to the ownership to France for its debts. It was Polish during four centuries till the 18-th century.
Poprad is in one of well-known historical regions in Slovakia – Spishskiy. By the way the town itself isn’t quiet attractive from a tourist point of view. Its suburbs are by far more interesting. There are two national parks at once in Slovakia not far from Poprad. They are Slovak Paradise and High Tatry.
Thanks to them Poprad is so famous nowadays. The thing is that a peculiar situation of the town made it a unique tandem point via which the tourists get to well-known skiing resorts in Slovakia: Shtrebske Pleso, Tatranska Lomnica and others. Nowadays Poprad is the only town which is connected by a railway communication with all prominent Tatran villages. Besides there is an international airport called “The Air gates” in High Tatry. An airport in Poprad is considered to be the highest mountain in Europe.
There are not so many sights in Poprad. Such sights as a central square of St.Egidiy with a Gothic cathedral of St. Egidiy and also a suburb of Spishska Sobota – a famous type of museum in Slovakia where examples of folk architecture and way of life are exposed in the open air deserve a special attention.
